Celeste PICO-8
Celeste PICO-8 (often called Celeste Classic) is the original version of Celeste, created by Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry in just four days during a game jam in 2015. It was made for PICO-8, a "fantasy console" with deliberately tiny screen and memory limits. Despite its size, it already contained the jump, dash and climb mechanics that later made the full 2018 Celeste one of the most acclaimed platformers ever.
Climb the mountain one screen at a time. Each screen represents a higher altitude, starting at 100 meters. Avoid spikes and pits, and use your dash to cross gaps and reach high ledges. Reach the summit to finish the game.
Celeste PICO-8 is a fascinating look at how great games start. The full Celeste includes a playable version of this original as a hidden bonus, a nod to its roots. Fans later created a sequel, Celeste Classic 2, also for PICO-8. Playing the original shows how strong core mechanics can make even a small game feel excellent.
PICO-8 is a fantasy console created by Lexaloffle, designed to feel like a tiny retro game system. Games are limited to a small screen, a 16-color palette and strict memory limits. These restrictions encourage creativity and have made PICO-8 popular for game jams. Celeste's success shows how much can be achieved within such limits, and many developers use PICO-8 to learn game design.
It is short, with around thirty screens. Many players finish in under an hour, though collecting every strawberry takes longer.
