shapez.io
shapez.io is a factory-building game created by the German developer Tobias Springer (known online as tobspr) and released in 2020. It started as a free browser game and was later released on Steam, and its source code is openly available. Unlike most factory games, there are no enemies and no time pressure. The only challenge is designing efficient production lines that turn simple shapes into complex ones.
The map is an endless grid with deposits of basic shapes like circles, squares and stars, plus deposits of color. Place extractors on these deposits, connect them with conveyor belts and deliver the results to the central Hub. Each level, the Hub asks for a specific shape in a specific quantity. Meeting the goal unlocks a new building.
The early levels of shapez.io ask only for plain circles or squares, but the goals quickly become intricate, multi-layered, multi-colored shapes. Producing them requires several separate production lines feeding into each other, and later the game adds wires and logic gates for players who want to build fully automated systems. Many players describe the game as surprisingly meditative: watching a well-designed factory run smoothly is deeply satisfying. It is also a gentle introduction to ideas used in programming and engineering, such as breaking a big problem into smaller, reusable steps.
