Shift 2
Shift 2 is the sequel to Antony Lavelle's Flash puzzle platformer Shift, released on Armor Games. It builds on the original's brilliant idea: the world is drawn in black and white, and pressing one key flips it so floors become empty space and empty space becomes floor. The sequel adds new mechanics, more complex puzzles and the same stylish monochrome look.
Reach the exit door of each level. You can stand only on surfaces of the opposite color. When you shift, the screen flips and gravity reverses relative to the view, placing you on the other side of the surface. Use shifting to bypass walls and reach new areas.
Shift 2 shows how a single mechanic can support a whole series. New elements make familiar ideas feel fresh, and the puzzles become more intricate. Fans of the first game will appreciate the added depth, while newcomers can learn the basics in the early levels.
If you get stuck in Shift 2, try sketching the level in your mind with the colors reversed. Many solutions involve shifting at an unexpected spot, such as the edge of a platform or the top of a small ledge. Remember that keys and doors may also appear in either world, so think about which version of the level you need to be in to reach them. Patience and experimentation usually reveal the answer. Since levels restart instantly, there is no harm in testing a wild idea. Many players also find it helpful to step away for a moment, because a fresh look at a puzzle often makes the solution suddenly obvious.
It helps, but Shift 2 explains its mechanics as you go.
